Music Between Companion Species
May - November 2023

Music between Companion Species is a series of concerts conceived and performed for and with dogs, their human companions and other more-than-human presences who may join these sessions. Inspired by Donna J. Haraway’s Companion Species Manifesto and by cientific studies about dog’s preferences for sound and music, the concerts will take into account these animals’ unique sensibilities and hearing capabilities. Paulo Cunha e Silva Art Prize

Created by the City Council as a tribute to the late Councillor for Culture Paulo Cunha e Silva (1962 – 2015), a central figure for the city’s artistic life, the award, held every two years in Porto, recognises the talent of new generations of national and international artists. This year’s edition underlines the Prize’s commitment to fostering creation and cultural exchange by establishing a partnership with three world-recognised residency programmes: Arquipélago Centro de Artes in S. Miguel, Azores, Cove Park, on Scotland’s west coast, and Pivô, in São Paulo, will all host one of the nominated artists, appointed by a jury of three members.

The Nominators for the 2023 edition of the Art Prize are:
Artist Ângela Ferreira, Jan van Eyck Academie Director Hicham Khalidi, and cultural programmer Tabitha Thorlu-Bandura.

Duet is an invitation for two artists to share an exhibition space. It started as a proposal for a young artist from Porto to think of an artist they would like to share an exhibition with. Recalling the impact of her survey show at the Serralves Museum, Maria Paz invited Joan Jonas to share the exhibition space of the Galeria Municipal do Porto. In this transatlantic exchange of generations, the two artists will reveal their common investigations of forms, colours and materials.

 The Sylvan and Harsh North

What are the meteorological patterns, the myths and stories, the rhythms, colours and shapes, the human and nonhuman inhabitants that make up the Iberian Northwest, in its reality and fiction?
Wondering about the rituals and expressive modes of people, animals, plants, elements and minerals, we went looking for the roots, terminations and tentacles of the Iberian Northwest, trying to locate the places where they might reside. In doing so, we considered the past but above all faced the present-future of these concrete and imagined spaces between seas, woods and settlements. The Sylvan and Harsh North is an exhibition that follows roads and lines of intensity, centrifugal forces that take us beyond Porto, towards those supposed margins where permutations erupt, to discover and share the references, stories, words and connections to these places with a long past and an even longer future.

    Exhibition: Silvestre Pestana
    A key figure in Porto's contemporary art scene, Silvestre Pestana is a pioneer of visual poetry, performance, video art and electronic and digital art whose exploratory practice began in the 1960s. This exhibition showcases a new, large-scale installation entitled Colapse, which builds upon his rigorous analysis of the impact of technology on our society.

    Exhibition: Eunice Pais
    Eunice Pais is a Portuguese-Mozambican multidisciplinary artist who lives and works between Esposende and Porto. Her practice draws on different legacies to question forms of coexistence between species and geographies. For her first exhibition in an institutional context, entitled Sea Skin, the artist uses film and installation to explore an expanded reading of the landscape, proposing a listening space that analyzes the interdependent relationships between memory and ecosystem.

    Exhibition: Mauro Cerqueira, Joana Escoval, Sara Graça, Catarina Miranda, Mariya Nesvyetaylo
    Commissions is a new initiative by Galeria Municipal do Porto that supports the creation of new artworks and showcases the vitality of the national art scene. This first edition features five individuals from various backgrounds and age groups, many of whom play an active role in Porto's cultural life, exploring diverse areas of interest and modes of expression.

    Gallery Talks: Constança Entrudo
    The guest for February's Gallery Talks is Constança Entrudo, a Portuguese designer whose practice combines material research, experimentation, and a fluid approach to fashion design. With a degree in Textile Design from Central Saint Martins in London, she worked in studios such as Balmain and Peter Pilotto before founding her own research and design studio.
     
    Constança Entrudo stands out for her innovative textile exploration and the visual strength of her prints, presenting collections at New York Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, and ModaLisboa. Her collections are available at various international luxury retailers.
     
    She has collaborated with brands such as Camper and Timberland, and has formed industrial partnerships with RDD Textiles and Trimalhas. She also develops artisanal collaborations with the Madeira Embroidery Institute, reinterpreting traditional Portuguese techniques with a contemporary approach. She also works in art and interior design. Her pieces are featured in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Costume Institute) and the MUDE – Museum of Design and Fashion. The brand recently presented its latest collection at the Gulbenkian Foundation's Modern Art Centre.

    Abril Febril: Carme López, emmy Curl, Fidju Kitxora and La Familia Gitana
    Abril Febril is a tribute to the ferverous atmosphere of April 1974 and a reflection on its meaning today. Now in its third year, the event, held at the Concha Acústica do Palácio de Cristal, once again brings together a series of musical projects that embrace the imagery of the time and explore what revolution can mean today. This year's programme features the fusion of Galician folk music experimentation by Carme López and the pop universe of Portuguese artist and producer emmy Curl; the electronic diaspora between Portugal and Cape Verde by Fidju Kitxora; and the gypsy music culture of La Familia Gitana. These acts explore the various possibilities of what can be understood as traditional Portuguese music.

    Commission for the courtyard: Pia Camil
    In 2026, Pia Camil (Mexico City, 1980) will be the guest artist invited to install in the outdoor courtyard of Galeria Municipal. A large-scale textile installation designed specifically for the context of the city of Porto will be created from second-hand clothing collected in dialogue with the city's population. This installation will create a place for the public to observe and inhabit. Reflecting Pia Camil's research into collaborative practices, the installation sits at the crossroads between artwork and playful space. It addresses themes such as the world of the textile industry and how it functions as a repository of cultural information and a portrait of collective consciousness.

    Colectivos Pláka: Marco Martins
    Colectivos Pláka is a programme of studies on contemporary society and art that promotes encounters between thought and practice, creating spaces for dialogue, learning and sharing.
    The first course of the 2026 edition is coordinated by Marco Martins, a director and filmmaker who has established himself as a unique voice in the Portuguese artistic scene. With an extensive body of work spanning various disciplines, from cinema to theatre and the visual arts, Martins' work has progressively anchored itself at the intersection of various performative languages, collaborating with non-actors and specific communities through long, creative, community-based processes with a strong choreographic element. The course will take place during the first week of May at a location to be confirmed.

    Exhibition: Lydia Ourahmane
    Lydia Ourahmane (1992, Saïda, Algeria) is a conceptual artist. Her practice includes installations, sculptures, moving images, and sound works designed to engage audiences and communities, creating situations that transcend the walls of the institution while negotiating the terms within it. At Galeria Municipal, she will present a new version of the installation Per Voce (2025), developed in collaboration with her sister Sarah Ourahmane, a composer and musician. The work consists of a score composed based on the architecture and acoustics of the exhibition hall, to be performed by visually impaired singers.

    Exhibition: Augustas Serapinas
    For the first time in Portugal, Lithuanian artist Augustas Serapinas (1990, Vilnius, Lithuania) is presenting a large-scale installation that transforms the gallery space into a hybrid of a gym and a design studio. Cultivating both body and mind, the dumbbells of the bodybuilding machines are transformed into fragments of classical sculptures, referencing everything from the city of Porto to the worlds of art history and philosophy. At the intersection of objects and bodies that evoke the origins of Western society, the exhibition humorously echoes the motto "mens sana in corpore sano".

    Circuitos'26
    Circuitos'26 is the third edition of an initiative that aims to raise the visibility of the people and projects that make up the artistic fabric of the city, and to strengthen the connection between the public and contemporary art in Porto.
     
    Organised by the Contemporary Art Department of Ágora – Cultura e Desporto do Porto, this year's event once again demonstrates the initiative's commitment to an open and cross-cutting approach to the city's artistic scene.

    Exhibition: Isabel Carvalho
    Galeria Municipal do Porto is dedicating an exhibition and a publication to the life and work of artist Isabel Carvalho (1977, Porto). With an artistic career spanning more than twenty-five years, her practice crosses the visual arts, literature and public life in many different ways, ranging from independent book publishing to drawing, painting, sculpture, performance and music. This exhibition marks a decisive period in the artist's career.

    Exhibition: Basel Abbas e Ruanne Abou-Rahme
    Working together since 2009, artists Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme are among the most prominent contemporary artists experimenting with sound and image. Combining Abbas's experience in sound and music production with Abou-Rahme's background in cinema, the pair produce works of image and movement resulting in totally immersive environments. They subvert archives, expanding the boundaries of their content to challenge linear narratives and discourses. The duo creates porous spaces, understanding installation as a space that is simultaneously fictional and documentary, where one can investigate and question social and political conditions of the past.

    Exhibition: Leonor Parda
    Leonor Parda (1986, Porto) is a visual artist, post-romantic poet, existential experimentalist and dreamer who believes in art as a poetic means of inhabiting the world. In her exhibition at Galeria Municipal do Porto, she continues to explore themes that characterise her work, such as the interactions between power dynamics, social structures and the human condition. She observes how these themes manifest in bodies, objects and identities through a multidisciplinary proposal combining sculpture, visuals and sound recordings.
