Sea Skin: Eunice Pais

Eunice Pais is a Portuguese-Mozambican multidisciplinary artist who lives and works between Esposende and Porto. Her practice draws on different legacies to question forms of coexistence between species and geographies. For her first exhibition in an institutional context, entitled Sea Skin, the artist uses film and installation to explore an expanded reading of the landscape, proposing a listening space that analyzes the interdependent relationships between memory and ecosystem.
Curated by Patrícia Coelho

Bestiary of macroalgae & other beings, with Seaghosts & Reina del Mar

— What cyborg seaweed exists in our imagination and by the sea?

In this workshop, which is part of the programme for the Sea Skin exhibition, we will create algae-beasts and other creatures from the underwater worlds of the future. Drawing inspiration from cyborg manifestos and archives from a seaside universe, younger audiences will be guided through the creative practices of Seaghosts and Reina del Mar. Using drawing, collage, digitisation and modelling techniques, we will collectively create a bestiary of macroalgae, seaborgs and other beings.
Venue: GMP/Floor -1

Target audience: Children aged 6 to 10, accompanied by adults.

Participation is free and no registration is required for the sessions.

Space is limited. Participation is made by order of arrival.

The Seaghosts collective, formed by Maria Novo, Sancha Castro and Simón Jarpa, combines installation, performance and audiovisual practices. Their work involves participatory processes with the community and dialogue with areas such as ecology and marine biology, exploring relationships between art, science and territory.

Reina del Mar is the artistic name of Marina Rei, a native of the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros. Her artistic and curatorial practice combines cultural hacking, curating, cultural programming and sound design. She investigates the potential of active listening as a feminist sound practice, as well as the influence of digital technology and hyperstimulation on the construction of identities and control of attention. She creates parallel universes through educational programmes, collaborative artistic practices and programming in public or unconventional spaces. She is a founding member of the Pedreira collective in Porto and guest curator of the Tremor Festival in the Azores.

Walk through the sargasso landscapes of Apúlia, with Álvaro Campelo and Eunice Pais

Led by anthropologist Álvaro Campelo and artist Eunice Pais, this walk will explore how the harvesting of sargassum has shaped the landscape and local community of Apúlia. The discussion will draw a connection between the exhibition Sea Skin and this region.

The activity invites you to discover the Sargassum Landscapes, the result of traditional practices, collective memories, and cultural experiences that continue to shape the area.

Free admission.

Álvaro Campelo holds a PhD in Anthropology/History of Religions (Sorbonne, Paris IV). He is an associate professor at Fernando Pessoa University, having previously been Director and Scientific Coordinator of the Centre for Applied Anthropology Studies from 1999 to 2007.
